SEO - Google Adwords

What is PPC?

PPC is pay per click. Basically that means that you put an advert on another website and, er, pay for each click. In fact it’s cleverer than that, because the adverts are often “content sensitive”, that is the advertising system decides what adverts to include, based on the content of the page. If you look at the advertising on this page, you will see what I mean. I dont decide what goes there, Google does.
What are adwords?
Adwords are Google’s brand of PPC advertising. Their ads appear on, not only the google search engine, but potentially on the other sites that sign up to display adverts. (like mine :-).
There are other alternatives, such as Overture, Mirago, etc, and each has its own sites.
How do I advertise?
If you sign up to google’s adwords, you select key words or phrases that you would liek your advert to appear next to. So, if I wanted my little advert to appear whenever someone searches for “cat gut”, I would bid for “cat gut” on the Google adwords. I can bid for as many as I like, and I only pay when someone clicks.
What does PPC cost?
This is the big question. The answer is it depends… not much of an answer I know, but it depends on the popularity of the words or phases. I read recently that the most expensive words on Google are things like “refinance” and are going for over $40 per click. (shows how much money there is in finance). For the rest of us in the real world, expec to pay between 3p and £2.00. What you pay will depend on your particular area of interest and how niche it is.
