There are 2 types of sitemap, and both are important.

Sitemap for users
This is simply a page that lists all the other pages on your site, and can be used by visitors as navigation or to see the “scope” of your site in one place. Its worth adding one of these.

Sitemap for Search Engines
Google, yahoo and the other engines use a special sitemap file to tell them what pages exist in your site. This makes their job easier when they crawl your site for content. So anything you can do to make their job easier, the better. The format of this file is in XML, if that means nothing to you, dont worry, its just a way of writing a file with the content grouped in a special predefined way. The good news is that its not difficult to create one of these sitemaps, and there are many free utilities out there that can do it for you.
